How To Clean Your Yard After a Storm

When a large storm barrels through your neighborhood, there’s not much more you can do other than wait and hope nothing gets too ravaged outside your home. Large storms especially tend to leave a lot of yard damage in their wake. The first order of business is to make sure everything is safe before you check on your landscaping. Here is how to clean your yard after a storm in a way that will quickly get you back to normal.

Inspect Trees for Dangers

The first thing you need to do is be wary of the trees around your house. Storms have a habit of damaging large branches to the point that they might be unstable under their own weight (if they don’t break them off entirely.) To prevent any accidents, look for these dangerous branches and remove them yourself if it’s safe to do so, or hire a professional to handle branches that are too high up.

Clear Up Large Debris

Once you’ve ensured everyone’s safety, you can get to the real cleanup. The next step in cleaning your yard after a storm is to get rid of any larger debris that may have ended up on your doorstep. Depending on the severity of the storm, this might take you a few minutes or a few hours, but the work itself should be rather easy unless a very large piece of debris shows up.

Remove Damaged Plants

To get your yard back in working order, inspect all your plants for any damage. Some pants may have been torn apart by the wind; others could have been uprooted entirely. These damaged plants won’t recover, so it’s important to remove them so they don’t keep absorbing water and nutrients from the plants that will recover.

Trim Up Remaining Plants

For bushes and hedges, remove any damaged areas. Keep in mind that you only need to trim away areas that were severely damaged. Mild damage can heal itself over time. A quick trim will make sure that your bushes and shrubs will recover in full.

Fix Depressions Where Water Collects

It’s never a good thing to have water collect on your lawn. If you notice patches of water pooling up, it could mean there’s a depression there you need to fix. These stagnant pools can bring annoying insects and bacteria to your yard. It’s a good idea to drain them and fill in the depression so that water flows more easily for the next storm.
