When your job calls for serious demolition work, you know you’re going to need a few dumpsters. However, how many will you need, and how do you figure that out? In order to figure that answer out, you’ll need to use a demolition dumpster calculator. For this calculation, you’ll first need to know how much waste and debris you’re going to make during your demolition project. Thankfully, there is a simple calculation you can use to attain a good estimate of how much debris you’ll create. Here is how to calculate demolition debris waste so you can ensure you have the right number of dumpsters.
The Basic Formula
There is a formula you use to gain a fair estimate of how much debris waste you will create. This formula will obviously not perfectly calculate the amount of waste you will produce, but it will get you remarkably close. The formula multiplies the area’s length in feet by its width in feet and its height in feet. This number is then multiplied by one-third and divided by 27 to convert the answer into cubic yards. To make it clearer, the equation is as follows:
- (Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Height (ft) x 1/3) / 27
Size of the Area
To understand the first part of how the demolition dumpster calculator determines the amount of waste, you must first know the dimensions of the space in feet. You can do this yourself or check the building’s blueprints, but it’s important that you know the dimensions in feet. To get an accurate idea of how much debris you’ll make, be sure to take certain factors into account, such as how many floors there are and if there are any intersecting walls.
Airspace
You may wonder why the one-third calculation is important to the equation. Multiplying by one-third accounts for the airspace of the room or rooms. You aren’t going to knock down a solid block of material equal to the size you figured out previously. There’s obviously a lot of empty space between walls and between the floor and ceiling. One-third is a simplified number that takes this airspace into account.
Cubic Yards
So far, all our calculations have been in cubic feet, but most dumpster measurements are in cubic yards. To account for this, we divide the entire calculation by 27 because there are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Once you do this, you’ll have a much easier time deciding what size dumpster you need and how many you’ll need to rent.
