Four Tips for Cleaning up Your Construction Site

Most construction projects come along with their fair share of dirt, dust, and debris—and the larger the project, the longer the cleanup usually takes. However, tidying up your construction site doesn’t have to be a headache. These four tips for cleaning up your construction site will have everything spick-and-span in no time.

Tidy up periodically

Regardless of your construction site and project’s size, you will likely have a fair amount of debris. Cleaning and tidying up the work site throughout the day is a great way to reduce the amount of time spent cleaning at the end of each day. Following the completion of a task or the end of a shift, take a brief walk through the construction site to make sure personnel tidied up everything. Regularly cleaning the construction site will also help reduce the amount of time spent cleaning after completing the project.

Provide proper waste receptacles

One of the top tips for cleaning up your construction site is to provide proper waste receptacles. Renting a dumpster is the best way to ensure all debris is properly removed from the construction site. Place the dumpster in a central location that is easily accessible by all workers and where you can easily remove it from the construction site. Consider placing additional waste containers throughout the construction site as well. These smaller containers will help reduce the amount of waste throughout the job site and will reduce the overall amount of cleanup at the project’s end. Stay organized

Organization plays a large part in keeping your construction site clean and safe. Creating an organization system for tools and equipment will help keep your construction site free of clutter. This will reduce the risk of injury as a result of these tools being accidentally underfoot. You should also keep building materials in a central location that is easily accessible by all workers. Keeping materials in one location, rather than allowing them to disperse throughout the site, will reduce the risk of misplacing or damaging them. To ensure a safe and tidy construction site, be sure to have a place for everything and to periodically check in to ensure it’s all there.

Designate areas for hazardous material disposal

While you can safely dispose of most materials found at a construction site into a dumpster, potentially hazardous materials are not acceptable. There are many materials found at a construction site that the city may deem hazardous, including high-grade solvents and chemicals. Construction companies should never throw away these materials in a dumpster, as they can harm the environment and waste management workers. Establishing a separate location for the proper disposal of potentially hazardous materials will keep your construction site clean and your workers as safe as possible.

Materials – Weight, Extra Costs and Prohibited Items

How is the weight of my debris determined?

The truck drives onto a scale at the disposal facility where an initial weight is recorded (gross weight). The truck then empties the contents of the dumpster. Next, the truck drives onto a second scale that records the weight of the truck and the empty dumpster (tare weight). The difference between the first and second weights (gross – tare) is the weight of the debris in the dumpster. The scales are regulated by state bureaus of weights and measures.

What materials may incur extra costs?

$20/pc - mattresses.
$15.00/pc - non-commercial tires, no more than 10 per dumpster.
$150.00/pc - commercial tires, no more than 2 per dumpster.

What materials are prohibited?

Hazardous waste, dirt, industrial waste, chemical products, oil filters, herbicides, pesticides, radioactive material, solvents, paint (except completely dried latex paint cans, no liquids), other flammable liquids, aerosol cans, propane tanks, motor oil, transmission oil, lubricating/hydraulic oil, oil filters, contaminated oils (mixed with solvents, gasoline, etc.), antifreeze, appliances, petroleum contaminated soil/lead paint chips, tires, batteries, computers, monitors, televisions, microwaves, fluorescent tubes, railroad ties, medical waste, asbestos, animals, barrels, all liquids.
Nothing can be sticking out of the top of the roll off dumpster.

Property Considerations

Will the dumpster cause driveway damage?

Although driveway damage is unlikely, please be aware of the possibility of damage caused by the weight of the dumpster and the contents placed in the dumpster.
Prevent Scratching & Cracks
We recommend that you place 4′ x 8′ sheets or 2″ x 4″ plywood on your driveway where the dumpster will be placed. The wood will prevent the dumpster from scratching or cracking the driveway. Please take the proper precautions to protect your driveway!

Do I need a permit to place a dumpster on my property?

Dumpster permits are typically only required when placing a dumpster on public property such as a street, easement, or sidewalk.
Please contact your local township office or public works department to determine exact permit requirements for your specific situation. Permit requirements can vary within the same town based on placement specifics!

How large of a space do I need for delivery of the roll off dumpster?

It is recommended to allow 4’ of clearance on all sides of the dumpster to assure adequate clearance. Please refer to our Dumpster Selection Guide for dumpster dimensions.
